Introduction
The department of PG Biotechnology, Alva’s College, Moodbidri, was established in the year 2009 with an objective to impart knowledge in theoretical and practical aspects of Biotechnology. In addition to teaching, the department is also conducting research in the areas of Bioprospecting, Nanotechnology, Plant tissue culture and Microbial biotechnology. The Department consists of 4 experienced faculties with Ph. D. degree and among them Dr. Rama Bhat and Dr Jayadev K. are recognized Ph. D. guides of Mangalore University. Dr. Rama Bhat is also a recognized guide of Tumkur University, Tumkur and Bharathiar University, Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu. The following were the funds received from the external funding agencies.

Laboratory facilities
The department has sophisticated laboratories in Molecular Biology, Microbiology, Plant and Animal Tissue Culture. Some of the infrastructure available in the department include Laminar Air Flow Cabinets, Autoclaves, Hot air oven, Incubators, Cooling Centrifuge, Orbital shaker, inverted microscope, Compound Microscope fitted with image capturing unit, UV- visible Spectrophotometer, Carbon dioxide incubator for Animal Cell/tissue culture, PCR machine, ELISA reader, Tissue homogenizer, Muffle furnace and BOD.
