Introduction
The department of BOTANY was established in 2003, is one of the leading departments of Alva’s College. Experienced and dedicated faculty members are supporting and guiding the students. The department has long record of academic excellence and we uphold this reputation. The department also encourages the faculty and students to undertake the Research, Project works and participate in Conferences and Intercollegiate Competitions. It also organizes activities like student seminars, student projects, guest lectures, workshops, plant a week, certificate course (Herbal remedies, plant nursery management), field trip, study tour, visit to various research institutions, extension program and also provide industrial interaction. The department also supports and guides the students for their future career by conducting career guidance programmes, alumni interactions regularly. Department also provide consultancy services on Plantation crop diseases to the community in the name of “Sasyasanjeevini”. The department has initiated with a special yearly Environmental awareness program on “Nagabanas” of different panchayaths of Dakshina Kannada District. Students are also trained in Mushroom cultivation, Grafting techniques. faculty members are making regular communication with the parents of their wards to inform the all round development of their wards.

Research
The Department guides the interested students to take up research activities and encourages the students to present and publish the results of their work in Seminars/ Conferences and in reputed journals. It has identified four broad areas for research these are
- Phyto-Sociological Survey of Nagabanas of Dakshina kannada
- Ethnobotanical survey
- Documentation of Plantation crop diseases and their management
- Diversity of Algae
Consultancy
- Sasyasanjeevini is the Plant consultancy unit of U.G Department of Botany. It provides free services for the farmers on different aspects of plantation crop diseases and also conducts workshops and guest talks on commercial crops/ plantation crops and propagation techniques for local agricultural community and community groups.
- Department provides consultancy on terrace gardening and organic farming.
Extension Activities
- The department regularly conducts the workshop on Mushroom cultivation for local communities and self help groups and students.
- The department regularly organizes awareness programmes in Environmental conservation.
- Department provides awareness on herbal medicines and ethnic food for the student community.
Placement
- Through the placement cell of the college students are given placement training and later they get placed in various reputed companies.

- Alumni are the great strength and supporter for the progress of the department.
- Alumni of the department are working as Teachers, scientists, administrators entrepreneurs and managers in corporate sectors.
